About Kakarikis

Kakarikis, or New Zealand parakeets, are bold, energetic birds known for their playful antics and curious personalities. With bright green feathers and striking red markings, they make a lively and rewarding addition to experienced bird homes.

What to Consider When Purchasing Kakarikis

Kakarikis are very active and love to forage, explore, and interact. They’re happiest with time outside the cage in a bird-safe area. These birds are inquisitive and benefit from puzzles, enrichment, and interaction β€” though some may not seek cuddles in the same way as cockatiels or lovebirds.

They need a large cage and benefit from a varied diet including seed mix, pellets, and a wide range of fresh foods. While not always loud, their call can be sharp, and they love to chatter during the day.

With proper care, kakarikis can live 8–10 years. They’re ideal for owners who want a parrot with a big personality and energy to match.

We do not usually always have kakarikis available but we are able to order them into the store on request and are always happy to advise on diet, housing, and care.
