At Town Gardens & City Pets, we offer meaningful work experience placements for individuals eager to build hands-on skills in animal welfare, plant care, and retail.
Learn more about usThese placements provide a behind-the-scenes look at the day-to-day running of a licensed pet and garden centre, where high standards of animal welfare and responsible retailing are at the heart of everything we do.
Participants gain practical experience with small animals, birds, and aquatic livestock—learning the importance of proper nutrition, hygiene, enrichment, and monitoring animal health. Placements also cover plant care, including watering routines, maintenance, and creating customer-facing displays, as well as general retail duties.

These placements provide valuable real-world experience in a busy, licensed pet shop setting, covering animal care, customer service, and day-to-day shop operations.

At Town Gardens & City Pets, we offer a range of work experience and volunteering opportunities designed to help individuals build real-world skills in a supportive and friendly environment. Our placements span multiple areas of the business, including:
Animal Welfare – Learn about proper care, feeding, hygiene, enrichment, and handling of small animals, birds, and aquatic livestock
Plant Care – Support the upkeep and presentation of our garden centre, including watering routines, display creation, and seasonal maintenance
Retail & Customer Service – Gain confidence in a busy retail setting by helping customers, managing stock, and learning shop floor operations
Online Marketing & Social Media – Get hands-on experience with content creation, product photography, scheduling posts, customer engagement, and digital promotion strategies
We welcome participants from various backgrounds, including those referred through Jobcentre Plus as part of government-backed work experience schemes. These placements are a fantastic way to rebuild confidence, gain new skills, and explore future career paths in a real business setting.
Each placement is tailored to the individual, and we work closely with external advisors to ensure your time with us is structured, meaningful, and enriching.
