Fin rot, which is also known as tail rot, is one of the most common bacterial infections in fish. Fin rot usually starts around the edges of the fin or tail and gradually destroys the tissue. If left untreated, it may work its way to the body, leading to secondary infections and rapid deterioration of your fish’s health. Fungal infections do not take hold in healthy fish as the fish’s slime layer prevents the spores from infecting the living tissue. However, if the slime layer is damaged, fungus can develop quickly. Any disease that produces open wounds can lead to fungal infection.
Captive fish live in a completely closed environment and are entirely dependent on their surrounding water. Fin rot and fungal infections are more likely to occur in aquariums with poor water quality, in fish that are stressed and those recovering from illness.
